Rising Above “Us” vs. “Them” Thinking

Have we created a divide between those who we consider to be “us” and those we consider to be “them”? Between “us” who we consider to be enlightened and get it and make the right choices and “them” who we believe to be ignorant, don’t get it and are making bad choices? It is an easy thing to do. And yet, not the way Jesus taught us to be with each other.

This week we will look at teachings that say that variety actually makes things more perfect. In other words, someone else’s way of doing things or way of living is part of the same beautiful tapestry. Can we try to cultivate curiosity about why other people are the way they are? Can we challenge ourselves to be patient and take time to look for the good and how others might just be adding goodness and quality to the world. As we read in the book of Romans: “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of Christ’s one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others.” (Romans 12)
