The Healing Message of Jesus, Part 4

On several occasions in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus declares, “You have heard it said, but I say to you…” In each instance Jesus is challenging the hearer to look deeper into the law that they had heard before. For example, the law said do not murder. Then Jesus says, but I say to you do not be angry or hateful or hold others in contempt and look down on them, to paraphrase. He is saying just not killing someone won’t change your heart, especially if your heart wants to hurt someone else. We are being challenged to dig deeper and examine what we think, intend and desire and not just what we say and do. This is what will bring true healing and true peace.
